Social media has the potential to advance health literacy, safety, and transparency in the pharmaceutical industry, although potential pitfalls and liabilities have inhibited the industry’s participation. In spite of these challenges and fears, there are compelling facts that the time to join the conversation is now. Eight in ten internet users look online for health information, making it the third most popular online activity among those included in a recent Pew Internet Project survey. This digitization of healthcare creates scenarios that need to be addressed, understood and challenged.
