Pfizer Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer and PCORI Board of Governors Member Freda Lewis-Hall, MD, recently noted that “it seems counterintuitive that ‘patient-centered’ drug development is now a hot-button issue for those of us involved in new therapies. Drug development should be patient centered—we all want medicines to be safe, as defined by their benefits versus their risks, and we want them to be effective for the patient.” The excitement about the idea of being “patient-centered,” she notes, comes from the growing recognition that patient views and values can, and should, be captured and integrated in new ways –technological and otherwise – in the drug development process.

As Lewis-Hall says, many in the research community now believe that scientific inquiry in drug development should go beyond “safe and effective”— essential as these are — to focus on outcomes that patients themselves tell us are meaningful ones. In this PCORI-DIA webinar, we’ll look at how PCORI and others are advancing patient-centeredness and engagement in research, what we know so far about the impact of this trend, what we hope to learn in the future, and implications for industry.

This webinar was developed in collaboration with the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)
