Our History

DIA has evolved from a founding group of 30 professionals employed in academia and the pharmaceutical industry into a global, multidisciplinary association of nearly 18,000 members in more than 80 countries. Our mission is to advance the discovery, development, and life cycle management of safe and effective medical products. 

1964 
DIA is founded and incorporated in the State of Maryland, USA.


1979
Cmdr. Thomas W. Teal (Ret.) becomes Executive Director of DIA and Editor-in-Chief of the Drug Information Journal. During this period, DIA membership and activities increase substantially. The number of annual meetings, training courses, and symposia grows to more than 30 and expands to audiences in Canada, Europe, and Japan.

1989
The North American Steering Committee (now known as the Advisory Council of North America) is established, followed by a Steering Committee for Europe (now known as the Advisory Council of Europe) and Southwest Asia-Pacific.

1991
DIA opens office in Basel, Switzerland.


1992
Erich F. Lukas Jr. takes over as Executive Director and serves through 1995. During that time, committees are organized to address particular topics through meetings and workshops on a recurring basis.

1996
DIA launches www.diahome.org

Joseph R. Assenzo PhD is named Executive Director.


1999
DIA opens office in Tokyo, Japan.


2005

Board of Directors approves new Volunteer Awards Program.

Board of Directors changes the status of the Advisory Council of Japan from provisional to full.


2006

DIA holds the first Special Interest Area Community (SIAC) Leadership Summit in Dublin, bringing together SIAC Chairs from Europe and North America.

DIA organizes the EMEA EudraVigilance Training Program.


2007

DIA Board forms the Provisional Advisory Council of India.

DIA hosts First Clinical Forum in Europe.

DIA presents First Conference for Asian New Drug Development, focused on global clinical trials in China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan.

DIA collaborates with IFAPP, SAMEFA, and SBMF to present the 4th Latin American Congress of Clinical Research in Sao Paolo, Brazil; and the DIA, ICRI, & BCI 2nd Annual Conference on Drug Discovery & Clinical Development in India.


2008

DIA establishes Advisory Council of China.

DIA opens office in Beijing, China.

DIA opens office in Mumbai, India.

DIA presents First Annual Regulatory Conference in India.

The 44th DIA Annual Meeting in Boston is the largest event in DIA history.

DIA cosponsors the African Regulatory Conference in Fourways, Johannesburg.


2009

DIA launches the Global Forum, which provides members with globally focused information from China, Europe, India, Japan, Latin America, and North America.

DIA presents first training workshop in China and hosts the first DIA China Annual Meeting in collaboration with the China Center for Pharmaceutical International Exchange of the State Food & Drug Administration.

Leadership from the US FDA, WHO, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, International Vaccine Initiative, Developing Countries Regulatory Network, and BIO Ventures for Global Health convene at DIA’s First Global Vaccine Development for World Health Symposium.


2010
DIA signs memorandum of understanding with the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association (CPA) to collaborate on a quarterly Chinese language DIA/CPA newsletter and on global and regional professional education opportunities.

DIA/CPA publishes Global Pharmaceutical Forum.

DIA presents First Cardiac Safety Workshop in Japan and, with the South African Development Community as co-sponsors, presents the 2nd DIA African Regulatory Conference in Johannesburg, a program developed by the Africa Regulatory Network of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations and other advisors.

FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg delivers keynote address at 46th Annual Meeting.

DIA presents DIA 2010 Korea Meeting, in partnership with the Korean Society of Pharmaceutical Medicine and the Korea National Enterprise for Clinical Trials.

DIA launches DIA ConneX, a members-only social networking platform that allows DIA SIAC members to network and collaborate online with professional colleagues all around the world.

The Board of Directors officially establishes first Steering Committee of Latin America, comprised of representatives from Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico, to be supplemented by additional members from Chile and Central America to provide regional insight and representation.
